SEARCH INTERFACE INSTRUCTIONS AND INTRODUCTION

LED SEARCH
This is a parametric scenario planner which allows you to find LED sets which accomplish your lighting goal. Based on available products and using manufacturer's models the tool can suggest combinations of LEDs to meet the lumens, color, temperature and current constraints of your new design.

The search is designed to allow you to zoom in on potential solutions so we recommend you start broad and gradually narrow your requirements as you see what is returned.

Basic Search

1. Select the lumen output you require from your fixture.

2. Choose a color temperature (for white) or color for your light source (the default is "Any white")

3. If you have a particular form factor in mind you can specify the number of LEDs you would like to use but it is typically best to leave this at "Fewest" for the first search to see what comes up. After your first search you will be able to explore specific numbers of LEDs (including a single LED) combined with the current limit below. The Number of LEDs slider will split into 2 to allow a range to be specified.

4. The default for maximum LED forward current is 4.00A but for your first search you can leave this at "Any". Once you have a list of possibilities you will see the forward current required in each scenario. If you wish to reduce the forward current for reasons of power or longevity you can do so on this slider and modify the candidates returned.

5. Optionally you can limit your results to a given manufacturer.

Advanced Search

1. Target luminous efficacy in lumens per watt allows you to specify your goal. The results will be automatically sorted, high to low, on this value column and will indicate by row color, which solutions have met your stated target. Green rows meet the specified criteria and red rows fall short.

2. The model used takes the solder point and junction temperatures into account. The junction to solder point is determined by the individual LED's thermal resistance and the effect on liminous Flux and forward voltage are reflected in the numbers returned. This also has an impact on lumens per Watt as listed in the results.
3. Lastly, you can further narrow your results if you have a particular viewing angle requirement. The slider contains all values found in the database but is not effected by other search criteria (you may return zero results).
Once you have a list of candidates you can modify the sliders to reduce the sets of options to a manageable number. All the columns are sortable on click so the parameters which most interest you can be listed ascending or descending.

Note: The voltage listed is per LED and you will have to calculate the actually multi-LED forward voltage drop based on you configuration. Example: Vf total = #LEDs x Vf per LED for a single string. This is important for you to determine your LED driver requirements.

At any time you can explore the manufacturer's data sheets and other details by selecting the part number or the series links in the table.

The search information will remain in the table if you navigate away from the results and then return.

DRIVERS/MODULES SEARCH
The parametric drivers/modules search will allow you to input your requirements (which you may have derived after using the LED search) and get a list of potential solutions from multiple manufacturers. Basic search allows input on voltage source, output voltage and current. The advanced search allows the specification of channels (strings), integrated ICs (with or without internal power stages) or finished modules. You can further specify dimmable options or the need for PFC capability.

If you have performed an LED search many of these values will be in the results table. You will also need to know the configuration of your LED array to determine the total constant drive current (If) and the maximum total voltage drop across your string or strings of LED's.


An example may help but be aware that the product listing of the site is dynamic and the same search produces different results as products are added and removed by manufactutrers:

Scenario 1:
1000 lumens required, Cool white light, current maximum desired is 350mA.

One of several returned scenarios uses the XLamp CXA2011 from Cree, specifically the CXA2011-0000-000P00J00E3 which comes from the 1120 Lm Flux bin. Voltage per LED = 38.92V, with a drive current (If) to achieve 1000 lumens of just 210mA.

To drive this single LED array would need a driver capable of 210mA at 38.92V.

If we plug this into the driver search (we can leave the results in the LED search table as they are) selct "Driver IC" then "DC" and specify the input voltage "10V". Vout at 39V and Current at 210mA from the LED requirements and hit search we get 4 results of drivers capable of driving the single string we found in the LED search.

TOOLS SEARCH
On LED product pages and Driver product pages, any development tools associated with the product are listed. If however you would like to explore tools while in the parametric search you can do so.

If you find a driver which looks promising in your list of search results you can immediately select this in the driver search using the driver series number.

Example Leave "TOOL TYPE" = Any, Select "--Works With--" = DRIVERS, then "MANUFACTURER" = Texas instruments and "SERIES" = TL4242 and hit search. In this way you can explore evaluation options.

OPTICS SEARCH
Currently only lenses, it is possible to find compatible optics on any LED series or product page on Lighting Developer but if you know the LED series and want a quick way to find a compatible lens you can use the Optics search.

For example if we choose, Cree > Xlamp XPG the search yields a variety of lenses which work with this LED.

LEDS

TOTAL LUMEN OUTPUT
The lumen value required from the total system (single or multiple LEDs)

COLOR
Choose White or Color. The default is "Any White" but the color slider allows you to choose the white color temperature in Kelvin. Similarly if you chose "Color" you can specify the color as a range of wavelengths in nanometers.

NUMBER OF LEDs
The default position will return the lowest number of LEDs required to fulfill the requirements entered in all the fields. The results table will show the lowest number of LEDs sorted by Lumens per watt. Choosing specific number of LEDs by spliting the sliders and specifying a range will return the scenario with LED numbers withing that range. There may be many results so only the first 50 will be displayed.

MAXIMUM DRIVE CURRENT
The default is ANY CURRENT and all possibilities will be returneIf the forward current is limited but this selection no scenarios requiring more forward current will be returned. This is an important power and longevity consideration. It is recommended that this be left at ANY CURRENT for the first search them reduced to an acceptable value once a solution set is available.

MANUFACTURER
It may be useful, if a long list of products are returned to review them by manufacturer.
The default is ANY

ADVANCED SEARCH OPTIONS:

TARGET LUMINOUS EFFICACY

TEMPERATURE
The default setting is 25 degC Junction. The likely junction temperature can be selected or, if "Solder Point" (case temperature) is chosen, the junction is determined by the individual LED's thermal resistance and the effect on luminous Flux and forward voltage are reflected in the numbers returned. This also has an impact on lumens per Watt as listed in the results.

VIEWING ANGLE
You can further narrow your results if you have a particular viewing angle requirement. The slider contains all values found in the database but is not effected by other search criteria (you may return zero results).

DRIVERS/MODULES

DRIVER TYPE
If you are looking for a complete driver solution select "POWER SUPPLY" to search for modules. If you prefer a "driver IC" as the basis of your own driver design, choose "Diver IC". The default is "POWER SUPPLY"

VOLTAGE IN: AC/DC
The default is AC with no input voltage specified.
If AC input is choosen, select the input voltage range to your driver circuit if it is known.
If you have chosen a DC source you can pick the desired input voltage level with the slider up to 500V.
The search looks for driver circuits which can handle the voltage specified. i.e. within the maximum to minimum output voltage specified. Be aware that many driver ICs which do not integrate the power stage have no practical limit to the output voltage so they will all be returned by this search.

VOLTAGE OUTCalculated as the total voltage drop accress the chosen LED array. The default is "Any" and the maximum is 300V. Be aware that driver ICs which do not integrate the power stage have no practical limit to the output voltage so they will always be returned by this search.

OUTPUT CURRENT PER CHANNEL
The default is ANY and returns drivers fulfilling all the other conditions ignoring output current. Selecting the current output per channel will return all drivers capable of delivering this current (at least) under the other conditions specified. MANUFACTURER
It may be useful, if a long list of products are returned to review them by manufacturer.

ADVANCED OPTIONS:

NUMBER OF CHANNELS
Depending on the LED configuration it may be desirable to have multiple strings requiring either multiple drivers or drivers with multple outputs.

INTERNAL POWER STAGE REQUIRED
For ICs only, the device may not drive the constant current directly but require an external power stage (simple open source FET for instance). Selecting "YES" here returns only those driver ICs with direct drive capability.

DIMMABLE
Some devices have built in facilities for dimming which can be requested here. The types of dimming depend on the choice of DC/AC.

POWER FACTOR CORRECTION
Some devices have built in facilities for PFC which can be requested here.

OPTICS

TYPE
Restricted to lenses at the moment this will return the same result as the default ANY TYPE

Is the manufacturer of the LED for which a suitable lens is being sought.

LED SERIES
This menu is modified depending on the manufacturer selected and allows the series for which a lens is being sought to be selected.

TOOLS

TYPE
Select the type of development tool you are looking for. The default ANY returns all types.

--Works With--
This is where you select the product type for which you seek a development tool. LEDs, DRIVERS are currently the other options.

BY MANUFACTURER
Once you have selected a product type you can specify the manufacturer of that product.

FOR SERIES
Once you have selected the product type, the manufacturer you can select the series for which you seek a development tool.

FOR SERIES EXAMPLE:
